Hiriketiya (you’ll also see it spelled Hiriketiya Bay or just “Hiri”) is a tiny, palm fringed horseshoe bay on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Ten years ago it was a quiet fishing cove; today it’s one of the island’s favourite places to surf, work remotely and slow down, while still feeling small.
Where is Hiriketiya?
Hiriketiya sits just east of Dikwella in the Matara District of the Southern Province. It’s roughly:
- 3 hours by car from Colombo or the airport (via the Southern Expressway)
- 1 hour 15 minutes from Galle
- 40 to 50 minutes from Mirissa
- 30 minutes from Tangalle

What is Hiriketiya like?
The whole bay is maybe 500 metres from end to end. A road loops around it, lined with cafés, surf schools and guesthouses. Behind that, the land climbs into coconut groves and jungle where most of the villas are hidden.
- Surf: a friendly beach break in the middle of the bay and a faster reef wave on the side.
- Vibe: barefoot, social, a mix of surfers, remote workers and couples.
- Food: far better than you’d expect for a place this size. See Hiriketiya restaurants.
When to go
The main season on the south coast runs from November to April, with the driest, sunniest weather and most consistent surf from December to March. May to September is monsoon season: quieter, cheaper and wetter. Full breakdown in the best time to visit Hiriketiya.
Where to stay
There are three simple options:
- On the bay: walk to everything. Best for surfers and first timers. Beachfront stays →
- On the hill: quieter, greener, most of the pool villas. Villas →
- Dikwella beach: long, calm sand five minutes west, with bigger properties.
Our where to stay in Hiriketiya page compares every area on one map.
How many days?
Three to four nights is a good minimum. Surfers and remote workers often stay weeks, and there are places set up for long stays, with coworking and kitchens.
