Short answer: the best time to visit Hiriketiya is December to March, when the south coast is dry and sunny and the surf is at its most consistent. November and April are excellent shoulder months with lower prices.

The two seasons

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit different coasts at different times. For Hiriketiya on the south coast:

Season Months What to expect
High season December to March Dry, sunny, calm mornings, clean surf, busy and pricier
Shoulder November, April Mostly good weather, some showers, better prices
Low season May to September Southwest monsoon: rain, wind, bigger messy swell, very quiet
Intermonsoon October Often the wettest, quietest month

Temperatures barely change: expect roughly 27 to 31°C all year. The difference is rain, wind and sea conditions.

Peak season tips

  • Book the best stays early. Christmas to New Year and February sell out months ahead.
  • Popular places can have minimum night rules over the holidays.

Low season tips

  • Monthly rates drop a lot, which is ideal for long stays.
  • The east coast (Arugam Bay) is in season from roughly May to September if you want surf.

February is hard to beat: dry, sunny and with consistent surf. January and March are close behind. December is great too but the busiest and priciest.

It can be. May to September brings rain and rough seas on the south coast, but also empty cafés, lower prices and good long stay deals. Rain often comes in bursts rather than all day.
